Detailed Analysis of the Transient Events at the Dayside LLBL

چکیده

Abstract. Low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) can be found at low latitudes on magnetospheric flanks and it covers the whole dayside magnetosphere. In spite of its crucial role in the solar wind—magnetosphere coupling, basic LLBL parameters and their relations to upstream conditions are still under debate. We analyze in details Themis multipoint observations of one multiple LLBL passage with motivation to determine sources of observed transients. The data are compared with predictions for flux transfer events (FTE), upstream pressure pulses, and surface magnetopause waves. Although these processes exhibit many common signatures, a careful analysis can undoubtedly distinguish among them.

Dynamics of the LLBL Thickness Based on THEMIS

Low latitude boundary layer (LLBL) can be found at low latitudes on the whole dayside magnetosphere and along magnetospheric flanks. This layer is filled by magnetosheath-like and magnetospheric plasmas. The LLBL plays a crucial role in the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. We used measurements of the five THEMIS spacecraft that crossed the dayside LLBL on June 3, 2007. Simultaneous observatio...

Energy and pitch-angle dispersions of LLBL/cusp ions seen at middle altitudes: predictions by the open magnetosphere model

Numerical simulations are presented of the ion distribution functions seen by middle-altitude spacecraft in the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) and cusp regions when reconnection is, or has recently been, taking place at the equatorial magnetopause. From the evolution of the distribution function with time elapsed since the ®eld line was opened, both the observed energy/observation-time and ...

Some theoretical models for solitary structures of boundary layer waves

Solitary electrostatic structures have been observed in and around auroral zone field lines at various altitudes ranging from close to the ionosphere, to the magnetopause low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) and cusp on the dayside, and to the plasma sheet boundary layer on the nightside. In this review, various models based on solitons/double layers and BGK modes or phase space holes are discuss...

An Improved Modular Modeling for Analysis of Closed-Cycle Absorption Cooling Systems

A detailed modular modeling of an absorbent cooling system is presented in this paper. The model including the key components is described in terms of design parameters, inputs, control variables, and outputs. The model is used to simulate the operating conditions for estimating the behavior of individual components and system performance, and to conduct a sensitivity analysis based on the give...

The ionospheric signature of transient dayside reconnection and the associated pulsed convection return ̄ow

Three SuperDARN coherent HF radars are employed to investigate the excitation of convection in the dayside high-latitude ionosphere in response to transient reconnection occurring in the cusp region. This study demonstrates the existence of transient antisunward-propagating backscatter features at the expected location of the ionospheric footprint of the cusp region, which have a repetition rat...
